All Harvard Undergraduates are always welcome to audition for the opportunity to play in the jazz band. Auditions are held formally in the fall of the year during Freshmen Orientation Week and throughout the year by appointment.

This year's (2024) auditions will occur on the following dates and times:

Audition times are September 7th from 10:00am - 6:00pm and September 8th from 12:00pm - 4:00pm. Please follow the link to sign up for an audition time.

Auditions for Jazz orchestra rhythm section will be held September 8th at 4:10pm. No need to sign up for a time be there at 4:10pm if you wish to audition.

All auditions will be held in the common room at 74 Mt. Auburn Street.

Location: 74 Mt. Auburn St, Cambridge (Second floor of Office, Arts building)

Audition requirements for the Harvard Jazz Orchestra consist of the following.

Non-rhythm section:

  • Play a jazz tune or head of your choosing.

  • You may improvise over the piece of your choosing or any other, if desired.

  • Sight read an excerpt from big band chart, offered by the panel.

Rhythm Section:

  • Play in a trio/quartet format with other students

  • Consider enrolling in Music 107 to receive credit for your participation in the jazz bands! You must enroll consecutively in the fall and spring semesters to receive one credit, and only four semesters can be taken for credit, for a total of two credits.
